Retro is the new black. Again!
Structural, experimental, and free standing; this post-depression design, flexible in size with multifarious functionality is fitting to the lifestyle and crammed spaces of post millennia living. Created by revolutionary mid century designers with a focus on sleek geometry, the ‘less is more’ philosophy has resulted in iconic pieces such as legged coffee tables, statement light fixtures, and eccentrically set chairs. Glazed in earthy tones of brown, accentuated with accessories hued in amber, orange and olive-green tones, the Retro look is easy to attain with just a few changes to already existing furniture. The retro color palate, unlike any seen before or after, is experiencing a revival; brought on by the onslaught of Instagram users trending unsaturated filters on social media. The retro look is an amalgamation of texture and bold inventiveness, inspired by outlines found in nature. Creativity pairs organic wood and natural fibers to make pieces that reflect the past and the future. You can transform your living space to exude retro appeal by applying simple remodeling and refurbishing tricks at home.

Apply a New Stain
Ideally the material of wood used to build the furniture must be walnut, cherry, oak, or rosewood for an authentic retro feel. However, a wash of stain on wood can bring about similar results and make the furniture seem retro. Update the finish on your chosen piece by opting for natural stains in earthy tones such as Cherry, Walnut or Mahogany. Plain maple with orange hues is characteristic of the era while the brightness of the color opens up small spaces. Additionally, if you’re going for a more serene tone, walnut colored and fruitwood stains add an old world charm on rustic wood. Pair lighter browns featuring reflecting gold undertones with structural pieces while reserving darker finishes reflecting pumpkin undertones for geometric statement pieces. This will balance the aesthetics in the room.

Change Design Elements
When it comes to mid-century appeal, less is more. Originally, pieces constructed in that era followed the rule of clean geometric lines while surfaces may be laminated with particle wood. Tables, characteristic of the 1950’s era, exhibit sleek legs and eccentric arms. Most designs from the 1970's are bulky with low seating. Media stands and TV console tables are a throwback to the CRT television age and iconic of the era. For a quick and simple retro look, add wooden or metal legs to legless console tables, dressers, and even storage cabinets. Use these as coffee tables or media cabinets for living rooms. Adding a layer of laminate to the surface is a quick way to update your furniture and give it a retro look. Play around with wood laminates in neutral colors, or opt for the classic white; however, make sure the laminate showcases a Teak, Rosewood or Cherry wood pattern reflective of the time period.

Textures
Add elements of the past in your bed covers, curtains, and cushion accessories. Unsaturated green and orange tones like Carrot, Dijon, Olive, Honey, and Amber bring maturity to the living space while sporadic bursts of floral designs add charm. Upholster chair cushions with floral prints, or textured cloth and couches with somber brown leather. Distinctive of that era, you can also do away with bulky couches and set lounge chaise, designed with a thin wooden frame, with leather seats. Add natural materials like wool and cotton to contrast wooden accent, by placing rugs, cushions or even crocheted sofa throws.
Textures

The retro look and feel are all about the boldness of character and charm, thus focus on each piece of furniture collectively, and holistically. Add in a few ottomans with charmingly bright velvet upholstery to add dimension.

Colors
When talking about the 50's and 60's, what instantaneously comes to mind is the checkered tile patterns, mint green finishes, and cherry red velveteen chairs with sturdy metal legs. While the pre-industrialized era placed a great emphasis in the neutrality of hues, complemented with whites and blacks, the retro trend amasses designs from the last 50 years of the century, only to filter out the redundant and produce modern retro. In lieu of this shift, layered spaces adorned with textures and colors are expected to pop up. When choosing the color scheme of your room, it is important to think of other colors that could stand in contrast or complement your base tone. Shades of brown work best with cream, and hues of oranges; however, if you’re opting for a brighter look, you can always look into mint-green linoleum with a black base. For smaller spaces, pastel tones work best in adding a spacious perspective. You can choose from an array of color blends, but our favorite remain the dusty rose, with a laminate white finish, and the pale orange statement cabinets, with dark brown furnishings set against a textured creamy background.
Colors
To add in that final touch, opt for a contrasting shade for your curtains or blinds, or simply add a splash of green by setting up a few potted plants. The checkered patterns should also be incorporated as gingham has once again risen to the forefront, thanks to trendy hipsters. The checkered pattern, typically white with one other color, can be used anywhere, even walls. As the design makes a comeback, its general usage has been seen in the cushion and sofa covers, curtains, runners and table covers.

Accessorize
Once the bigger pieces of the room have been chosen and set up, it’s time to accessorize. This is where you can really be creative. Antique wall-mounted light fixtures and small chandeliers give off warm hues of light that complete your retro revamp. You can also look into simple pendant lights add subtle retro hints to space without overpowering its tone.
Accessorize

You can add gilded mirrors and ornate brass finishes completing the overall look. Most importantly, remember that once completed your room must seem cohesive. Adding too many colors or shapes and patterns will complicate the look and make your interior seem like the result of a squabble between trendsetters throughout the century.

Your accessories should complement your home décor. So keep it minimal, add the pop of color and choose the patterns wisely.

A Good Place to Read

A quiet corner in the house where you can curl up (and read all your favorite books) is essential. After a hectic day at work, everyone needs some space to unwind.

Choose a space that is silent and not in the middle of the home, add a comfy chair, a luxe floor lamp or table lamp, and a curvy table near at hand to make sure that you have an area of your own where you can just come, sit comfortably and have some ‘me time.’

Let Art Pieces Do the Talking

Art pieces are included in the most versatile decorating accessories. From sculptures to paintings, art is all about diversity. Regardless of your likes and dislikes or home theme, you can always find suitable art pieces or just create one of your own. If you want something stylish, you should consider a sculpture, particularly with metal finishing. In the event, you want to keep everything traditional, go for the classic landscapes or ceramic decoration pieces. In addition to that, don’t forget about the classical religious pieces, for example, a sculpture of Jesus, Islamic calligraphy and more. To make your home differ from others’ and to add a personalized touch, art is the best remedy. It is something that dates back to the prehistoric era. In the prehistoric period, people used to make cave paintings, which were later used for décor purposes as well as communication.

The cave art is preserved till date. If you have ever been to ancient places or museums in France or Italy, you may have come across such cave paintings. Hence, art is undoubtedly the most basic kind of home decoration. But remember that you need to have a skillful eye in order to purchase good art. All these things mentioned above are must-haves whenever you make your mind to decorate and organize your home. I hope it helps you out. Have a wonderful day!

Entertainment is a must for every human being on earth. And in India, entertainment more or less  means spending time with family, watching TV shows. Though other indoor entertainments have started to gain momentum, enjoying TV or any other visual media remains one of the most popular ones. No wonder, the extent of our inclination to cinema theaters is greater than in many other countries. But with lives getting more hectic by each passing day, we find it hard to take out time to travel to a good cinema theater to enjoy a movie. Well, if you are ready for a one time investment, why not think of a home theater instead! Home theaters  mimic the experience in a commercial cinema theaters (or in some cases even exceed the feel). If we are to count the upsides, there are plenty. Firstly and most importantly, you are at home, enjoying the ambiance of a cinema theater. Secondly, there is no time schedule you have to follow. And thirdly, well, the list goes on. Along with a home theater set, you need to spruce up the room to get that theater right at your home. Following are some of the coolest home theater designs to emulate at your home. Home theaters can be a part of your living room or a separate entertainment room like this. Since we are designing a theater at home, we get the flexibility to furnish the room with variegated furniture.

Here the room has a theater bed couch and plush recliner sofa, giving you a comfortable and luxurious experience. To make the room look more interesting, the colourful walls are adorned with black and white images of celebrities. Warm lights and false ceiling give an engaging look to the interiors.

This house has gone lavish with the entertainment/home theater area. To avoid a congested look of  an actual cinema theater, the furniture is kept sleek and low. A simple addition of an area rug has given a crisp detailing to the room which matches well with the dark wooden floors.

A simple yet functional home theater design. With colours kept neutral, the space flaunts a sober look. Focusing mainly on the functionalities, the  room gets a highlight with flashing neon lights.

Home Theatre Design

A basement has been put to, probably the best use, by creating a home theater. Since the availability of light is usually low, sufficient recess lights have been provided. To give the perfect feeling of a cinema theater, the seats are arranged at different heights to enable a comfortable watch. With a bar counter at the back of the seats, this home theater has outdone the commercial theaters in comfort and luxury.

The striking element indeed is the lighting here. With two large bed couches and 4 giant recliner sofas at the back, you can play the perfect host without thinking twice for an evening extravaganza.

Design Home Theatre

To make it more homely, this home theater has been planned within the living room. A large screen and a good amount of furniture (in a sufficiently large room) is all you need to create such a simple home theater.

Small Home Theater Design

Commercial theaters should take a tip or two from the above home theater. A large curved sofa is arranged in front of a sufficiently large screen, making it possible for people to have a chat while enjoying the show.

Home Theater Design Tips

The room has been converted into a wholesome theater space. With multiple layers of furniture, the space gives the family the freedom to carry out their respective works while watching their show. Home theaters will never be an overboard investment. After all, enjoying a TV session with your family members, with the ambiance of theaters and comfort of your home, is indeed priceless.

Vastu Shastra is a traditional Hindu system of architecture which literary means “science of architecture”. There are theories of Vastu Shastra describing the principles of design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement and spatial geometry. The need for Vastu Shastra is mainly to concentrate positive cosmic energy in the living spaces. However, it should be noted that Vastru Shatra is only a set of guidelines and may not be compulsorily used in all designs. Now let us see some key features of Bedroom design as per Vastu.

  • The shape of bedrooms should ideally be rectangular for efficient placement of the furniture. Also, the length to breadth ratio should be less than 2 in order to avoid long rooms.
  • Talking of the Master Bedroom, it should be slightly bigger than other bedrooms essentially because the parents should psychologically never feel small before anyone else in the home. Also, it should be located in the South-West of the house.
  • Children’s bedroom should ideally be located in the East or West side and the Guests’ bedroom may be in the North-West side.

  • Sleeping with the head pointing towards the North should be avoided and the bed should not be placed opposite to the door.
  • Divine idols should not be placed in bedrooms. They should be placed in the Puja room.
  • Aquariums should not be placed in bedrooms.
  • Mirrors should not be placed on the wall opposite the bed as it is believed to reflect our image and hold back our stress instead of releasing it in the morning after we wake up.
  • Television sets should be avoided in bedrooms. But in case kept, it should not be directly before the bed as it then acts like a mirror.
  • Clutter should be avoided as it represents stagnation.
  • Storing things under the bed should be avoided as it gets dusty becomes difficult to clean.
  • Slant ceilings or beams should be avoided.

Starting off in life as a young adult is hard. While out of your parents’ house and having the freedom to do (mostly) anything you want is great, financing your new life isn’t easy. For many young adults, important purchases like furniture are put off for years due to the high cost of living. Whether you’re just leaving home for the first time or you’ve been on your own for a while, there are a few essential pieces of furniture that every young adult should have. And, no, we definitely aren’t talking about an overstuffed beanbag chair. What are the essentials, then? Keep reading to find out!

A Nice Bed
If you are going to invest in one decent piece of furniture, make it a bed with a good mattress. When you are just starting out in the world, you’ll likely spend a lot of time working, hanging out with friends, and being generally busy. At the end of a long day, you need a comfortable place to get some sleep. You may think a cheap futon is good enough, but think again. You likely won’t sleep well on one, and it could contribute to back problems later in life. Save yourself a lot of pain, frustration, and restless nights by making buying a high-quality bed a top priority.
A Nice Bed

A Place to Eat
Your first apartment may not have enough space to house a traditional dining room table, and that’s fine. You still should have a surface for eating on, though. If you consume most of your meals in front of the television, a sturdy coffee table will do the trick. Small kitchen islands with bar stools also work well in places where square footage is limited. Even adding a bar stool or two by your kitchen counter works in a pinch. Just make sure you have a spot where you can sit and enjoy a meal without cradling your plate on your lap.

A Sofa
When buying your first sofa, you can buy a cheap one that will fall apart and need to be replaced in a few years, or you can buy a high-quality one that will last you for a decade or longer. Young adults typically opt for the less expensive option and plan to replace it later. While buying a nicer one may be more of a strain on your bank account, though, it could save you a lot of money and frustration in the long run.

sofa

A high-quality living room sofa will hold up through repeated moves, and you won’t have to worry about it falling apart at an inopportune time. It will also give your home (no matter how humble it may be) a more “grown-up” feel. If you purchase a nice sleeper sofa, you will have room for overnight guests in even the tiniest apartment. Or, of course, it’s the perfect option if you are living in a studio apartment without a bedroom.

An Organized Desk
No matter where you live or what you do, paying bills is part of being an adult. It certainly isn’t the most enjoyable part, but it’s a part that can’t be ignored. Keeping up with them can be overwhelming, especially for young people who never really had to deal with them before. Making sure you have an organized desk is a good way to ensure that everything gets paid on time and nothing gets lost. Look for a sturdy desk that features storage spaces where you can keep unpaid bills and receipts for those that have already been taken care of.

An Organized Desk

Having an organized desk also means that you will be able to efficiently work from home if the opportunity arises. More and more businesses are allowing their employees to work remotely, and freelancing has become the main gig for many entrepreneur minded people. Make sure you have a nice desk to be certain that you have a place to work if the need (or desire) arises.

A Few Multi functional Pieces
When you are first starting out, you shouldn’t buy too much furniture. In addition to taking up way too much space in small apartments, all that furniture will need to be moved every time you relocate. Since most people tend to move around several times before finally settling down, having a ton of pieces to haul around can get old fast.

Conclusion

Instead of buying several pieces, look for pieces that are multi functional. Obviously, things like your bed and desk should be separate, but there are a lot of accent pieces that serve multiple purposes. Storage ottomans, sleeper sofas with built-in storage, entertainment stands with shelving, and shelves with built-in lights are all great pieces that do multiple jobs without taking up a ton of floor space.

Conclusion
Being a young adult is overwhelming. For the first time in your life, you have the freedom to do just about whatever you want. You can decorate your home or apartment to your own tastes, and you are free to spend your money however you see fit. While it is important to invest in a few decent-quality furniture pieces, don’t go crazy. Remember that you will probably need to move all of your belongings a few times over the course of the next decade or so and that you might not have a lot of square footage to work with. Spend your money wisely on a few pieces that will provide you with several years of use, and start saving up to buy things like curio cabinets, formal dining tables, etc. when you buy your first home.

Are you afraid of the Dark?
Fear is the common emotion with darker interiors. Unlike beige or muted colors, which are the first choice for any owner, deep colors like black, coal, grey's are considered trickier to handle. “Called as a high-maintenance, dramatic and bold”, Is Black the color to be afraid of? On the contrary, it’s not as imposing as you think, Black walls provide perfect backdrop and act as a neutral canvas for your art, other decorative items to stand out.
Like a black dress, which makes a strong visual statement, black walls also send a message that it is complete and ready to be taken seriously. Be a space large or small, dark interiors make the rooms feel warm, cozy and of high -value.

Black is a symbol of power, courage and agility. The complementary hues to match this very essence are deep burgundy, scarlet red and golden hues. These combinations are well suited for personal or public domains. The formal lounge, or meeting spaces, the ambitious study or office areas, or even bedrooms to reflect love and passion can be perfect to dress up in black colors.

Here are the mighty 7 ways to use Black in rooms big or small, that too without even feeling shrinked or cramped up.

1. BLURRED SEAMS

Quite contrary to our design beliefs, deep colors blur the edges/corners of space, making the room appear seamless and large. One creative idea is to use wallpaper or a mural that transfers from one wall to another. So that the color of the wall behaves as a neutral and design becomes the primary focus.

Image 2

The edges, boundaries of a room are disguished by the matte black finish, making the space appear and feel larger than it really is.”

2. ADD MULTIPLE ACCENTS
Take the plunge, cover your room with black hues and to make it appear as a neutral canvas, add different interests in the space just like a bright upholstered chair or a trendy pendant light or colorful throw pillows. Color often tricks the eyes to make the room look larger and to have multiple dimensions. By adding right colors in the right amount will actually help to focus on the forefront, allowing the walls to disappear, acting neutrally as a backdrop.

3. LET WALLS DO THE TALKING
No hiding behind, this tip is about showing confidence about your bold choices and using the coal colors for the making of statement walls. Painting wall with black is an irreversible action, when accentuated with striking textures or metallic gold stylish shimmer turn out to be a big success.

Image 4

“Metallic gold tones when set against deep-tone backdrops, partnered with rich jewel tones and shadowy neutrals allow their sparkle to shine well.”

4. USE ARTISTIC LIGHTING FIXTURES
Without much talking, artificial lighting fixtures have become one of the most attention -grabbing pieces over the years. Use warm accent lighting with a great artistic appeal to create a spectacular look for your room. The hanging fixture will become the center art-piece, create interest while allowing the darker color surroundings to behave as a thick mat frame.

5. PLACING THE MIRROR
There is almost nothing on earth that a mirror cannot solve plus it adds elegance and finesse in the decor. Placing a mirror in a dark interior room will put a focal point, open up space at the same time while also serving a great idea to reflect any creative or decorative item which is worth looking at.

Image 6

“Placing a mirror is a simple, evergreen and magical tip to add depth and reflect back the available light in the given room.”

6. EXPERIMENT WITH DEEP COLOR FURNISHINGS

Deep color furnishings help to accentuate a space through their solid and bold character. Coal black rugs direct the eyes to the floor, making even a compact space appear larger at the base. They can be very well complemented with dark accent leather finished chairs or quality suede fabric. In reality, black furnishings, and even coal color furniture actually feel more personal, intimate and cozy than a space with bright colors.

7. TAKE SMALL BITES
An all-time safest option is to start small, instead of going bold, you can always start with wall trims, door architraves or kitchen dados. Let it sink in first, then you can imagine further and can go creative in full swing. These black accents help to add interest in the spaces, breaking the monotony and building the aesthetics.

It is fun to experiment with classical and traditional designs. The black motif wallpapers are symbolic to the princely charm, lifestyle and esteem. When looking to bring in transitional and eclectic design styles into your home, a maximal spirit will afford you so much more freedom when considering interesting decorative objects that anything but standard and streamlined in appeal. With maximalism, you’ll have much more freedom to follow your instinct which in turn, will make the design process so much easier. CUT OUT THE COUCH
When it comes to the evolution of interior design, a lot has changed when it comes to more rigid, formal design practices. As now there are no set design traditions to follow. And instead of having a standard couch in your living room like everyone else does, why not be a bit more daring and different? Skip a classic couch and go for something more unusual, like bench seating, a mix of plus chairs facing one another, or a chaise or a settee.
A stylish settee will add a distinctively sophisticated air to your living room design, while a group of comfortable chairs set in a grouping will help your living room interior design feel more inviting and intimate. Have your chairs centered around a table to bring everything together, while a bench like the one pictured above is perfect for relaxing after a hard day.

WALL LAMPS AND SCONCES
When it comes to modern lighting trends for your home, our interior designers often suggest new cover table sconce styles that take the less tabletop space. The best takes on modern wall lamps and sconces feature sleek matte finishes and over sized swing arms. They often also boast an Art Deco-inspired silhouette, making them timeless and handsome to boot. Far from old-fashioned, the new updates to wall lamps and sconces we’ve seen will make for a smart extra for a smartly realized living room design, giving a traditional, yet uniquely modern spirit to your living room interior lighting.

THE RETURN OF BLACK
You can never go wrong with black, so they say. And as the interior design trends 2021 are being revealed, our interior designers have come to a conclusion that black is now taking over the world of interior design. From black furniture, black prints, black walls, finishes, and fixtures, black is pretty much all over the place.
This year, black is used in multiple ways. For instance, you’ll find that one of the popular home design trends 2021 is having all black walls. This might seem a bit intimidating, but a black wall creates a powerful and elegant statement in home interior design. One of the most common misconceptions about using black for interior design is that it can make the room appear smaller. However, our interior design experts suggested pairing black with light colors since the contrast can help to further enhance the overall size and appearance of the space.

BRING NATURE INDOORS
The interior design trends this year are taking a more environmentally-friendly approach. Thus, it’s not surprising to see a lot of warm and nature elements being combined with earthen luxury. As a matter of fact, natural elements are seen as the best interior design trends for 2021.
Materials that were obtained from nature or those that mimic the look of nature are addressing this need. These interior design trends are making our spaces look more authentic and unique. You can apply natural wood in your home interior design, along with different stone materials, such as pebbles, granite, marble, and those materials that resemble and complement with natural elements. That being said, our interior designers at Decor Aid are embracing the use of handcrafted and recycled furniture and fixtures for interior trends 2021.

CURVES AND SMOOTH EDGES
One of the biggest changes taking place in interior design trends 2021 is the use of curves and smooth edges instead of the usual boxy edges and clean lines among furniture designs. From soft and puffy chairs to curved coffee tables, these interior design elements are all about comfort and elegance.
People are already tired of the use of square and rectangular furniture with straight lines and are now moving towards round shaped furniture and smooth fabrics. These shapes often resemble furnishings from previous decades, so it seems like the interior design trends of the 80’s and the 70’s are making a comeback this year as well. The use of curved furniture is also expected in commercial interior design trends 2021.

REFRESHED CLASSICS
Thanks to unexpected colors that are more playful in spirit, decorative goods from celebrated heritage brands like Wedge wood and Lladro seem all the more cover table and collectible. Use them to add a sense of play and visual interest in any room as you can never go wrong with beautifully refreshed and updated classics.

UNIQUE STATEMENT SEATING
Bring in striking conversational pieces with intriguing chairs that will be sure to boost the visual interest of a room while helping to better define it. Plus chairs are just large enough to really make a statement without being as visually heavy as say a table or a sofa. And even better is the fact that they are also easier to move from room to room.

THREE-ARMED CEILING LAMP
These matte black lighting units have been trending as walls sconces over the past few years and they look all the more viable as overhead lights since you can move and direct light to different zones with ease to create a compelling and comforting lighting scheme.

STATEMENT CEILING AND FLOOR
Statement ceilings and floors are made an entrance throughout interior design trends 2019. They can come in the form of bold colors and geometric patterns, which you can incorporate in the design of your ceilings or floors. But if you don’t feel like adding this eccentric interior design for your ceiling or floor, you can opt for a patterned floor and ceiling. This is also a great way to make a statement without going overboard with your interior design choices.

EARTHY COLORS
One of the most popular home design trends 2021 is the use of earthy colors. In previous years, gray tones were often all the rage in interior design. Also known as greige, this hue is a combination of gray and beige. This year, grey is still dominant but it’s often combined with softer pastels and earthy tones.
The interior trends 2021 are mainly about colors that appear in nature, such as soft greens and browns. Taupe, for instance, which was dubbed the Color of the Year for last year’s interior design trends, is now becoming a popular choice of color for interior design. Purple is also trending as an accent color, however, this color can be difficult to pull off since it has the tendency to dominate a space.

EARTHY COLORS

GREEN ACCENTS
Speaking of earthy colors, greenery accents and accessories remained a trend this year.  In fact, this was among the most noted interior design trend predictions 2021, as some interior design forecasters believe that last year’s green obsession is still going strong.
Decorating with textured plants and succulents is a great way to bring greenery to your home. And if you’re not a natural green thumb, opt for banana leaf accents. Pillow covers with banana leaf patterns are a great way to add texture to living room interiors. And if you want to be really bold, install banana leaf wallpaper to maximize the effect. This is a great way to bring a tropical vibe into your home interior design.

THE RETURN OF WALLPAPER
Forget about blank walls, because one of the best interior design trends for 2021 is the use of mesmerizing wallpapers. Installing wallpaper is a great way to add an interesting twist to your dull living spaces. This years wallpapers were more decorative and bold than ever before and this interior design trend is certain to replace the use of artwork and other art pieces for wall décor. Some of the most popular wallpaper designs for 2021 featured landscape scenery, abstract shapes, and colorful geometric patterns.

DARKER KITCHENS
Since the mid-80’s and on, most contemporary kitchens have been realized in white, from cabinets, counter tops, to kitchen islands. But as we saw at the interior trends 2021 design shows,  darker hues have been reconsidered for many kitchen options. Our interior designers at Decor Aid suggest adding natural hues in your kitchen design, such as incorporating wood tone kitchen cabinets.
If you want to go bold with your kitchen color, paint your cabinets in a bright blue hue or in unexpected shades of green. These bold colors will add more depth to your kitchen space, and why not – your kitchen is the center of your home and is where most entertaining usually takes place. These colors are also much easier to keep clean unlike white, which tends to show every blemish. Painting your kitchen with a brighter color is a great way to hide the flaws brought about by day to day use.

PERSONALIZE THE SPACE
Our senior designers believe that the most game-changing interior design trends 2019 is in owning your space, which means personalizing your space by infusing your own character and personality throughout it. In fact, DIY interior design trends are now going mainstream and you’ll find numerous resources online that can help you do the work. By adding a personal touch to your space, you can leave a mark on your own home’s interior design, making it feel customized for your lifestyle.

THE BREAKFAST NOOK RETHOUGHT
For an ultra-cozy way to start your day, one of the best interior design trends for 2019 is the return of proper kitchen dining. As of late, kitchen counters were doing double duty serving as both an informal place for quick meals and a practical spot for preparing meals. However, we’ve noticed a shift in formal dining rooms making way for larger combinations of kitchens and great rooms as one open floor plan.
More common than ever, dining room furniture can now be seen arranged in kitchens, which means removing the counter and the center island to make way for these furnishings. With this kitchen interior design throwback, you can comfortably entertain guests at the dining table while you go on with your tasks in the kitchen area. It’s like combining the dining room and kitchen into one, which not only saves space but also makes preparing and serving food much easier.

Why Interior Design Mood Boards Are Necessary?
Every designer has struggled with communicating their ideas to a client at some point in their career. This is because designing is sometimes relative to personal preference, especially when it comes to interior design and architecture. This is why mood boards are important. An interior design mood board is a great way of presenting initial ideas to clients in order to get their input. This smoothens the road for further progress on the project. It also makes the client feel like they are an active part of the project and their ideas matter to the designer. Interior design mood boards are also a great way of gaining insight into the thought process behind designers decisions. It dispels the notion that designers choose everything on a whim. They are also a good way to keep personal preferences like the clients favourite colour from creeping into the overall design concept. So let’s look at what exactly is an interior design mood board and how it can help both clients and designers get a better perspective.

Making the decision to paint a room black is a big deal. That was unheard of years ago. The recent design trend has been to go dark on walls, cabinets, and furniture.

6 TIPS TO CONSIDER WHEN PAINTING WALLS BLACK

Tip # 1 Black absorbs light, so you won’t get reflections from the walls bouncing the light around, so it’s important to choose your lighting carefully. Adding a chandelier, sconces and lamps with plenty of wattages will ensure you can see the room during the day, especially in rooms where you will spend a lot of time. For example, in a powder room, we have to hang recessed lights overhead and sconces on the walls which are controlled separately so we can have the room very light or very dim.

Tip # 2 The dark hue should be carried throughout the room, meaning replacing all cover switches and outlets a dark coloured hue. We have to add a black outlet switch plate in a glossy finish to the wall. We can also paint the outlet covers and switch plates the same colour as the walls, and remember to paint the tip of the screws too!

Tip # 3 Choose a sheen of eggshell or higher, matte will show every little scuff mark and leave a chalky residue on the walls. Eggshell is more durable and will retain the rich colour over time, a matte finish will fade quicker if exposed to sunlight.

Tip # 4 If you have high ceilings, choose a bright contrasting trim colour for added effect. Our ceilings are 10 ft high, so painting it a semi-gloss white gives a dramatic appearance. But if your ceilings are low, I would suggest painting trim the same colour as the wall, making the walls look taller.

Tip # 5 Use light finishes and linens to balance the room. Taking powder room as an example again we can add white hand towels and a white wire basket to hold tissue etc. to brighten the space. The countertop can also be white with slight grey veining. Using bright accents to add dimension and add interest to space, such as pink roses or other accents like pillows will brighten up a dark room.

Tip #6 If you’re apprehensive about painting a room black, start with a small space. Pick “safe” rooms to paint black, a gym and a powder room.
