Created by revolutionary mid century designers with a focus on sleek geometry, the ‘less is more’ philosophy has resulted in iconic pieces such as legged coffee tables, statement light fixtures, and eccentrically set chairs. Glazed in earthy tones of brown, accentuated with accessories hued in amber, orange and olive-green tones, the Retro look is easy to attain with just a few changes to already existing furniture. Tables, characteristic of the 1950’s era, exhibit sleek legs and eccentric arms. Most designs from the 1970's are bulky with low seating. Media stands and TV console tables are a throwback to the CRT television age and iconic of the era. For a quick and simple retro look, add wooden or metal legs to legless console tables, dressers, and even storage cabinets. Use these as coffee tables or media cabinets for living rooms. Adding a layer of laminate to the surface is a quick way to update your furniture and give it a retro look. When talking about the 50's and 60's, what instantaneously comes to mind is the checkered tile patterns, mint green finishes, and cherry red velveteen chairs with sturdy metal legs. While the pre-industrialized era placed a great emphasis in the neutrality of hues, complemented with whites and blacks, the retro trend amasses designs from the last 50 years of the century, only to filter out the redundant and produce modern retro. In lieu of this shift, layered spaces adorned with textures and colors are expected to pop up. When choosing the color scheme of your room, it is important to think of other colors that could stand in contrast or complement your base tone. The checkered patterns should also be incorporated as gingham has once again risen to the forefront, thanks to trendy hipsters. The checkered pattern, typically white with one other color, can be used anywhere, even walls. Accessorize

Vastu Shastra is a traditional Hindu system of architecture which literary means “science of architecture”. There are theories of Vastu Shastra describing the principles of design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement and spatial geometry. The need for Vastu Shastra is mainly to concentrate positive cosmic energy in the living spaces. However, it should be noted that Vastru Shatra is only a set of guidelines and may not be compulsorily used in all designs. Now let us see some key features of Bedroom design as per Vastu.

Location, shape and size-

• The bedrooms should always be located in the South because the living rooms are supposed to be located in the North of any house. Therefore, bedrooms being a private space should be located away from the spaces meant for entertaining guests.
• The shape of bedrooms should ideally be rectangular for efficient placement of the furniture. Also, the length to breadth ratio should be less than 2 in order to avoid long rooms. 
• Talking of the Master Bedroom, it should be slightly bigger than other bedrooms essentially because the parents should psychologically never feel small before anyone else in the home. Also, it should be located in the South-West of the house.  
• Children’s bedroom should ideally be located in the East or West side and the Guests’ bedroom may be in the North-West side.  

Key features and preferred arrangements-  

• The bed should ideally be positioned in a way that the occupant sleeps with his head towards the South.
• The doors should be placed in the East, West or North but not in South-West.
• For windows, the larger window should be in the North or East and the smaller windows should be in the west.
• Any bookshelf should be placed at the West of South-West of the room.
• Dressing table should be placed in the East or North.
• Wardrobes should be located in the North-West or South-West.
• Study tables should face towards the East, North or North-East 
• Any photograph, inspiring quote, painting, sculpture or even flowers should be located in a way that they can be seen as we enter the room. This provides a feeling of tranquility and serenity.
• Electronic gadgets should be located in the South-East of the room. 
• The sharp corners me be softened by some indoor landscaping. Also, the bed should be kept away from the sharp edges in the room.
• The choice of colors should ideally be pastels and softer tones. Very bright colors should be avoided.
• The North-East side of the room should be left open to allow the beneficial sunlight from the East to engulf the whole room.  

Things to be avoided- 

• Irregular shapes should be avoided for the bedrooms.
• Beds should not be shaky. It should be of good quality wood.
• Sleeping with the head pointing towards the North should be avoided and the bed should not be placed opposite to the door. 
• Divine idols should not be placed in bedrooms. They should be placed in the Puja room.
• Aquariums should not be placed in bedrooms.
• Mirrors should not be placed on the wall opposite the bed as it is believed to reflect our image and hold back our stress instead of releasing it in the morning after we wake up. 
• Television sets should be avoided in bedrooms. But in case kept, it should not be directly before the bed as it then acts like a mirror. 
• Clutter should be avoided as it represents stagnation.
• Storing things under the bed should be avoided as it gets dusty becomes difficult to clean.
• Slant ceilings or beams should be avoided.

6 TIPS TO CONSIDER WHEN PAINTING WALLS BLACK

Tip # 1 Black absorbs light, so you won’t get reflections from the walls bouncing the light around, so it’s important to choose your lighting carefully. Adding a chandelier, sconces and lamps with plenty of wattages will ensure you can see the room during the day, especially in rooms where you will spend a lot of time. For example, in a powder room, we have to hang recessed lights overhead and sconces on the walls which are controlled separately so we can have the room very light or very dim.

Tip # 2 The dark hue should be carried throughout the room, meaning replacing all cover switches and outlets a dark coloured hue. We have to add a black outlet switch plate in a glossy finish to the wall. We can also paint the outlet covers and switch plates the same colour as the walls, and remember to paint the tip of the screws too!

Tip # 3 Choose a sheen of eggshell or higher, matte will show every little scuff mark and leave a chalky residue on the walls. Eggshell is more durable and will retain the rich colour over time, a matte finish will fade quicker if exposed to sunlight.

Tip # 4 If you have high ceilings, choose a bright contrasting trim colour for added effect. Our ceilings are 10 ft high, so painting it a semi-gloss white gives a dramatic appearance. But if your ceilings are low, I would suggest painting trim the same colour as the wall, making the walls look taller.

Tip # 5 Use light finishes and linens to balance the room. Taking powder room as an example again we can add white hand towels and a white wire basket to hold tissue etc. to brighten the space. The countertop can also be white with slight grey veining. Using bright accents to add dimension and add interest to space, such as pink roses or other accents like pillows will brighten up a dark room.

Tip #6 If you’re apprehensive about painting a room black, start with a small space. Pick “safe” rooms to paint black, a gym and a powder room.
